At Southwark Law Centre, we believe that access to justice changes lives. Every year, we support individuals, families, and communities to resolve legal problems that could otherwise lead to homelessness, poverty, insecurity, or exclusion.
Our impact goes beyond individual cases. Through specialist legal work, community partnerships, and advocacy, we help create fairer systems and stronger communities across Southwark and surrounding areas.
Making a Difference, Every Day
Our team of solicitors and specialist caseworkers provide free, independent legal advice and representation to people who may not otherwise be able to afford help. We focus on early intervention, working quickly and effectively to prevent legal problems from escalating.
We measure our impact not just in numbers, but in outcomes. This includes homes saved, incomes protected, status secured and voices heard.
What We Achieve
Each year, our work helps to:
- Prevent people from becoming homeless by stopping or delaying evictions
- Secure vital income through successful welfare benefit claims and appeals
- Protect workers from unfair dismissal, exploitation, and discrimination
- Support individuals and families to resolve immigration and asylum issues
- Ensure access to education, care, and public services through legal challenges
Community Impact
We work closely with community organisations, advice agencies, and local authorities to reach people who face the greatest barriers to accessing justice. Our outreach and legal education sessions help communities understand their rights and take action before problems become crises.
We also empower local groups to engage with planning and development processes, giving communities a stronger voice in shaping their neighbourhoods.
Driving Systemic Change
Our impact extends beyond individual cases. We pursue strategic litigation and test cases to challenge unfair policies and practices. By sharing evidence from our casework, we help inform social policy, influence decision-makers, and contribute to campaigns for legal and social reform.
Our Reach
We primarily serve people who live or work in Southwark, Lewisham and neighbouring boroughs, supporting a diverse and vibrant community. Many of our clients face multiple pressures, including low income, insecure housing, language barriers, and limited access to digital services.
Measuring Our Impact
We track and report on:
- Number of people and households supported
- Case outcomes and success rates
- Homes saved and benefits secured
- Community sessions and partnerships delivered
- Policy and advocacy contributions
You can find detailed data and case studies in our annual reports.
Support Our Impact
Our work is only possible because of the support of funders, donors, partners, and volunteers. By supporting Southwark Law Centre, you help ensure that access to justice remains a right, not a privilege.
