Immigration Caseworker/Solicitor  

35 Hours per week 

Based in Southwark 

1 year fixed term contract 


Salary range 

NJC scale SP 28-37


£34,127- £42,433


The immigration team in Southwark Law Centre deliver specialist legal advice and assistance including outreach, telephone and email advice to frontline advice agencies and casework including appeals and judicial review. The need for our services has never been greater.


The successful applicant will have at least two years recent, professional experience of providing immigration casework in a legal or advice setting and Law Society Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Level 2 or higher.


If the successful applicant is not a solicitor they will need to be regulated by the OISC.  Law Society Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Level 2 exempts the caseworker in the asylum and protection category for OISC regulation but they will need to undertake OISC assessment exams at level one and three in the immigration category, if they have not already done so.


Experience of Legal Aid processes is desirable, but our organisation is not solely reliant on Legal Aid and we offer a high level of experience and expertise that can support professional development within the team. We will consider more junior caseworkers for the role or a very experienced highly skilled lawyer able to take a role in the supervision of others.

1 extra scale point for a solicitor qualification

Relevant casework experience 0-2 years SP28 (SP29 if qualified)

Relevant casework experience 2-3 years SP29 (SP31 if qualified)

Relevant casework experience 3-4 years SP30 (SP31 if qualified)

Relevant casework experience 4-5 years SP31 (SP32 if qualified)

Relevant casework of 5 years + SP32 (SP33 if qualified)

Southwark Law Centre is seeking to recruit an experienced Administrator based at our busy office in Peckham.

Southwark Law Centre is a charity, set up in 1976, committed to working within the community to enforce the rights of local people and access to justice. We provide high quality casework and representation service in housing, immigration/asylum, employment, public law and welfare rights to people in Southwark and surrounding boroughs.

You will work as part of our small, friendly, excellent administrative team. The role of the Administrative/Receptionist team is vital to the smooth operation of the Law Centre.

You will need to demonstrate the following essential key skills and abilities:

·        1 Year experience of providing administrative and reception support in a busy office environment

·        Ability to work on own initiative, organise and prioritise own work, meet deadlines and capable of working under pressure.

·        Experience of Microsoft Word, Excel, the Internet and email, and a willingness to learn and use other software packages as needed

·        Good interpersonal skills and the ability to relate sensitively to a wide cross section of the public/other agencies and team members

·        Good numeracy skills

·        An understanding of and commitment to the Law Centre’s  Equal Opportunities policies

·        Attention to detail and accuracy

You will need an understanding of the community served by the Law Centre. The ability to communicate effectively and demonstrate initiative are essential. This role would be ideal for someone interested in developing a career within the charity sector and office administration.
