How to make a referral to Southwark Law Centre

  • The Law Centre does not have any drop-in advice sessions.  Most of our cases are taken on by referral only. Unfortunately, the Law Centre is not able to take on all cases which fall within our referral criteria as the need for specialist advice exceeds supply. If we cannot take the case on, we will try to help you find sources of advice or assist in resolving the problem without the client seeing a lawyer. We only take on cases where in the Centre’s opinion the person cannot afford to pay for legal advice and where no other representation is available from other sources such as a trade union.

    To make a referral please:-

  • Telephone the Law Centre first to see if we can take the case on (whether we can take a case on will depend on capacity- this can vary from day to day)

  • Do not advise the client to come to the Law Centre without a referral/appointment -  we will not be able to see themBefore calling, please try to obtain enough information about the case to enable us to assess the referral properly when you call us and please try and obtain relevant documents from the client, for example

    • notice of eviction,
    • dismissal letter
    • decision letter(s) from the Homeless Persons’ Unit/Benefits Agency/Home Office
    • details of the client’s income

  • Please do not delay in referring the client to the Centre – as appointments are booked up very quickly.

  • Please note that unfortunately, we are not usually able to take Housing referrals on Wednesdays.
